  1. Step 1: Submit your applicationThe application takes around 10 minutes to complete. Once submitted, our team will review your application and be in touch about the next steps.
  2. Step 2: Interview & Getting to Know YouA friendly conversation to learn more about you, your tutoring or teaching experience, the subjects you’re confident in, and how you like to work with students. It’s also a chance for you to learn more about Top Tutors Scotland and ask us any questions.
  3. Step 3: VerificationBefore getting started, we’ll complete a few important checks, including your right to work in the UK, PVG Scheme membership, academic qualifications and professional references.
  4. Step 4: Get StartedWe’ll match you with a suitable student based on your subject and experience, and once everything is in place, you can get started with your first lessons.

Earn £15–£23 per hour

Your rate reflects your experience, subject knowledge and the level you teach — with opportunities to increase your rate as you build experience and take on more students.

Flexible, self-employed tutoring

Work with us on a self-employed basis under a Contract for Services. Choose availability that works around your commitments, teach students matched to your subject and level, then invoice us monthly for the lessons you deliver.

How much can I earn?

£15–£23 per hour, with rates reflecting your experience, expertise and contribution as a tutor, alongside opportunities to increase your rate as you grow with us. You will know exactly what you are being offered before you commit to anything.

Do I need a PVG scheme membership before I apply?

You’ll need to have your PVG Scheme membership in place before your first lesson. If you’re not already a member, don’t worry: we’ll guide you through the process before getting started with us.

Can I choose my hours?

You’re free to choose the hours that work best for you. The number of students we can match you with will depend on demand for your subject and your availability, and we’ll always be open with you about the opportunities available.

Will I be self-employed?

Yes, you’ll join us as a self-employed tutor under a Contract for Services, giving you greater flexibility over how tutoring fits around your schedule. You’ll invoice us each month for the lessons you’ve delivered and manage your own tax and National Insurance as an independent tutor.

Do I need my own teaching materials?

We ask that you’re familiar with the latest Scottish qualification requirements, past papers and marking guidance. From there, we’ll support you with additional resources and work together to build high-quality materials that give students the best possible learning experience.
