How to revise for Higher Maths

A practical Higher Maths revision routine built around retrieval, mixed questions, clear working and timed practice with official past papers.

Higher Maths revision works best when it is built around doing mathematics, not reading about it. Notes and worked examples are useful when a method is new, but the exam asks a pupil to recognise the method and carry it out without the answer sitting beside them.

The aim of a revision session should therefore be simple: finish it able to solve something that you could not solve at the start.

Begin with a topic audit

Write down the main areas of the course and give each one an honest rating:

  • Secure: you can complete an unfamiliar question without notes
  • Developing: you can complete standard questions but still need prompts
  • Priority: you do not yet know how to begin

Start with one priority area, not the topic you already enjoy. A short focused session on a real weakness creates more progress than another hour spent repeating comfortable questions.

Learn the decision before the procedure

Many pupils can follow a differentiation, integration or trigonometry example once somebody has chosen the method for them. The harder exam skill is deciding which method applies.

For each question, pause before doing any algebra and ask:

  1. What information has been given?
  2. What result is the question asking for?
  3. Which topic or relationship connects the two?
  4. What would a sensible first line look like?

Practising that decision makes mixed exercises particularly valuable. A page labelled “differentiation” has already given away half the answer; a mixed set has not.

Use a three-stage practice cycle

1. Rebuild the method

Use notes or a worked example to understand the steps. Then close them and reproduce the method from memory. If you cannot, return to the explanation briefly and try again.

2. Practise without prompts

Complete several questions of increasing difficulty. Mark each one straight away and write down the exact cause of an error: choosing the wrong method, an algebra slip, a calculator entry, or unclear working.

3. Mix and time the questions

Once a topic feels secure, place it among questions from other parts of the course. Later, complete timed sections from official papers. This tests recognition, accuracy and pace at the same time.

Keep an error log

An error log is more useful than a pile of marked papers. For every lost mark, record:

  • the topic
  • what went wrong
  • the correct first step
  • one similar question to retry a few days later

Patterns appear quickly. If several errors come from rearranging expressions, the real priority may be algebra rather than the later topics where the mistakes surfaced.

Show enough working to earn the marks

Higher Maths marking rewards identifiable stages of a valid method. Mental shortcuts can be risky when they hide the method a marker needs to see. Write the formula or relationship, substitute clearly, keep equality signs aligned and state the final result in the form the question requests.

The official course page includes specimen papers, marking instructions and guidance on marking to standard. Compare your presentation with those instructions instead of checking only whether the final answer matches.

A workable weekly routine

A repeatable week might contain:

  • two short sessions on current priority topics
  • one mixed-question session
  • one timed paper section
  • one review of the error log and previously missed questions

Short, regular sessions usually reveal more than a single long session because the pupil has to retrieve the method again after a gap. That gap is useful: it shows what has genuinely stuck.

Revision should become more exam-like as the assessment approaches, but timed papers are not the starting point. Build weak methods first, mix them next, and then test them under time.
