
Pupils lose marks in Higher Maths for two very different reasons. The first is not knowing the maths. The second is knowing the maths and not showing it in a way a marker can award. The second one is fixable in an afternoon, and it is worth more marks than most families expect.
Marks are attached to steps, not to answers
A Higher question worth four marks is not one mark for the answer and three for effort. It is four identifiable steps, each with a mark attached: choosing a method, applying it, doing the arithmetic, and stating the result in the form the question asked for.
That has a practical consequence. A pupil who writes down the right approach, makes a slip in line three, and reaches a wrong final answer can still collect most of the marks. A pupil who does the whole thing mentally, writes one number, and gets it wrong collects nothing.
Show the method even when you can do it in your head. Especially when you can do it in your head.
The wrong answer can still be worth marks
Markers work through a script that follows a candidate’s own working. If an early slip is carried consistently through the rest of the question, the later steps can still earn their marks. The technical name for it is follow-through.
This only works if the working is on the page. An answer that arrives from nowhere cannot be followed, so it cannot be credited when it is wrong.
Where the marks quietly disappear
Four habits account for most of the avoidable losses we see:
- Not answering the question that was asked. “Hence” and “show that” are instructions. “Hence” means use the previous part. A correct answer reached another way may not get the marks.
- Stopping one line early. The question asks for the equation of a tangent; the working stops at the gradient. Everything was right and the last mark is gone.
- Rounding too early. Rounding at every step and then presenting an answer that is out by a decimal place costs the accuracy mark.
- Crossing out something correct. If it is not replaced by anything better, it cannot be marked. Leave it.
Paper 1 is a separate skill
The non-calculator paper is where competent pupils are caught out, not by the maths but by arithmetic they have not done unaided since S3. Exact values in trigonometry, surds left in exact form, and fractions handled as fractions all need practice specifically without a calculator.
The fix is unglamorous: work Paper 1 questions without a calculator anywhere in the room. If it is on the desk, it gets used.
How to practise this
Working past papers is only half of it. The half that changes marks is what happens next.
- Do a full past-paper question under timed conditions.
- Mark it yourself against the published marking instructions, being strict.
- For every mark you did not get, write down which of the two reasons it was: did not know it, or did not show it.
After a handful of papers, the pattern is obvious and usually lopsided. Most pupils find that a good share of what they lost was the second reason, which is the cheaper one to fix.
